About Us

Searchlight is a policy and opinion platform dedicated to advancing bold ideas, serious debate, and practical solutions for the challenges facing New York City and New York State.

Published by Citizens Union Foundation, Searchlight builds on more than a century of civic reform and independent advocacy. Since 1897, Citizens Union has served as a nonpartisan watchdog for honest, effective government—fighting corruption, promoting political reform, and holding public officials accountable.

At a time when public trust is strained and policy debates are often driven by heat rather than light, Searchlight aims to elevate the conversation. We will publish sharp analysis, original commentary, and evidence-based proposals from journalists, academics, civic leaders, elected officials, candidates, policy experts, and engaged citizens across the ideological spectrum.

Our mission is straightforward: to shine a light on the issues shaping New York’s future and to surface ideas worthy of serious consideration. We believe democracy works best when citizens are informed, arguments are tested, and good ideas can compete on their merits.

Expect thoughtful commentary, vigorous debate, and fresh perspectives on the policies, politics, and institutions that affect the lives of New Yorkers.

Searchlight is edited by Robert A. George, a veteran of the editorial boards of the New York Post, Daily News, and Bloomberg Opinion. His weekly newsletter will feature the latest Searchlight essays, along with a curated roundup of the most insightful writing on New York policy, politics, and public affairs.
