One “Big” Idea: Voices On The Campaign Trail

Searchlight’s launching “One Big Idea”: Let’s hear from the people asking for our vote!

Our big idea is a commitment to getting ideas in front of New Yorkers. The public needs to hear more substance from the people seeking their vote.

And so, we reached out to candidates in some of the most competitive contests to share one great policy idea — something concrete, meaningful, and aimed at improving life for New Yorkers, if not their fellow Americans too.

In the NY-7 race, Antonio Reynoso contends that addressing the horrific abuses of ICE over the last year and holding federal authorities accountable is an essential step toward achieving broader and more durable immigration reform.

In the NY-10, incumbent Dan Goldman unveils his ROBINHOOD ACT, to instill more fairness into the tax code. Challenger Brad Lander pushes back against dark money.

In the wide open NY-12 contest, Micah Lasher calls for an aggressive state and federal response to the partisan redistricting wave; Alex Bores insists that A.I. gains should flow back to the public.Jack Schlossberg warns about the corrupting power of Super PACs. George Conway on a novel approach to mental health reform.

The race for state comptroller features sharply differing perspectives on the office’s current and future priorities. Incumbent Tom DiNapoli discusses how New York’s innovative unclaimed-funds program can continue evolving to better serve residents – and serve as a national model. Drew Warshaw zeroes in on how the comptroller can and should use the power of the office to address the housing crisis. Raj Goyle believes modernizing the comptroller’s office will enable it to hold utility companies accountable.

We hope that these pieces help voters make informed decisions heading into the June 23 primary.
